Can it be any from the front rank or does it have to be a specific one? Do you decide or your opponent?

If there is a base behind the killed one does that get a chance to move forward at any point?

Thanks

You can chose any front rank figure. Yes the rear rank figure moves forward to take the place of the removed figure.

In which case why don't the rule say "remove a rear rank figure"?!

If the front and rear rank bases are different it's important. Otherwise most people do just remove a rear rank base.

Please note that it is ANY rear rank base replaces the front rank, so it need not be the one behind.

This can be important in pike & spear formations, or in mixed formations that have a contracted frontage.

There are specific rules for this in the base removal section of the combat section.

Example:
You must remove a base that faces the BG that did the most hits (melee here), unless....
there are some exceptions like it woudl brat contact with a BG etc.
