Gates of Troy install problem

Have an older retail release. Publisher name on the CD box is scubb interactive (the fine print says Scubb-com B.V. 2007).
Installed GoT with Spartan already installed to my hard drive. Ater the movie, I see at symbols in all the game controls (also in the header lines for the first three scenarios, as well as several places within the control screens themselves). Upper left of start screen says Text v 1.017 Code 2404 (3D) (Troy). Running Windows XP w/Service Pack 3. Graphics card is an NVIDIA Ge Force 6200. Anti-virus is AVG Free 2011 (10.0.1144), but I turned the AV off prior to installing.
I have a dx dialog file but the Upload attachment option doesn't like extensions apparently (at least not .txt or .atxt or .ext, the last two I tried to change to get the software to accept, but no such luck). Anyway, dialog file available if you'll tell me how to upload it or where to send it.
Spartan worked fine. When I initially posted about this problem (July 2012, doesn't time fly when you're having fun?), Ian's reply was, This is a language file issue. You may have installed Spartan and Troy in different languages? Reinstalling both in the same language should fix the issue.
I've since uninstalled Spartan (and GoT), searched the registry for Spartan and deleted all instances, and reintalled Troy. The install wizard never gave me a choice of langages to use for installation. I've still got the symbols everywhere. I've tried varying the settings on my video card (as per the Troy readme). I've also tried running in Windows 95 and Windows 98 compabablity modes as well as using 256 color and 640 x 480 resolution. And I STILL have the symbols.
Can anyone help me get this program running?
