Regimental guns

Used reg art for the first time and now need to check on how they work?
The rules state that the number of impact dice are the same for both sides. But then says that having a reg gun +1 or is it the same number of dice but you can opt to use the reg gun if it has a better factor?

my understanding (which maybe flawed)..
They alway hit for shooting and impact on 4s regardless of other factors...
I think it is same number of bases as opposed to dice... therefore I believe it gives you an extra dice at impact. My understanding would be on a 3 base wide impact zone it would be 6dice (2 per base) hitting on the POA score + 1 for regt gun hitting on 4s, adjusted for disruption/frag/disorders etc..

Regimental guns are an extra... indeed it can fight in multiple impacts.
For example:
^^^ABC
^^^ABC
EFG^XYZ
EFG^XYZ
the BG's above:
ABC is one BG with a Regimental Gun.
^ are spacers - ignore them.
EFG and XYZ are BG's without Regimental Guns.
In the first turn the BG EFG charges ABC. Only bases G & A get into impact combat.
G gets 2 dice and A gets 2 dice, but gets an additional dice for the Regimental Gun.
If G happens to be 'Impact Foot' they fight going for 4's. A would be going for 5's (disadvantaged) and the RG would be going for 4's (no factor).
In a subsequent turn if EFG and ABC were still locked in combat and XYZ charged, the RG would still fight again.
They seem pretty good value to me, but ARE expensive.

That's not strictly true, they have a basic 0 POA but are subject to situational factors. It's covered in this thread:

Blimey - so a BG of 6 bases of MF Musket, Bayonet, Bayonet (2 ranks deep) with a Regmt Gun gets 7 dice on Impact against 6 dice for another similar BG without the Regmt Gun.
That is a powerful difference ... is that really the case as it is clear elsewhere that all Impact Dice must be equal - the only difference being the effect on the POAs to reflect Disordered/Fragmented etc
Interesting - this is the 2nd 'interpretation' I've seen in the last 2 days where what is written in the book appears to be being contradicted by 'spanish practices' from table-top play (the 1st being the Portable Defences not effecting enemy movement one).

Well, impact dice aren't ALWAYS equal. A BG who is disrupted get 1:3 less dice for example. The Regimental Gun rulesare fairly clear, but I can see why you would doubt it.

Indeed - not that I 'mind' particularly - as I have a number of armies that use Rgmt Guns - but it's worth knowing (& being sure about)

At Impact, the number of
bases fighting must be equal, not the number of dice - see P117. RGs are markers, not bases - see P.35.

Thanks - good to remember 'markers' not 'bases'.
