During the Impact Phase a bg of elephants at the bottom right of the photo (may not show in image) charged the elephants with the yellow counter. The chargers stopped on the front right corner of the yellow counter elephants.
During the Manoeuvre Phase the chargers must conform to their target. So we moved the long line of bow/elephant BGs sideways (i.e. to the left when looking at the photo) to make room. Luckily there was no obstruction preventing this in the top left corner of the photo.
Did we play this correctly?

As far as I can see yes. You must conform and there is nothing to stop it. Everything slides right the minimum. In this case a whole army a single base by the look of it.

I'm confused by the photo. Looks to me like you have 4 elephants in 2x2 charging into the yellow counter elephants. And, as I face the picture, there is a line of MF bow to the left of the 2x2 elephants. I agree with Phil that you would move the entire line 1 base to the left to make room for the chargers if you had a valid charge. But it looks like you have corner to corner contact. Page 56 "Legal Charge Contact" does not allow only corner to corner contact for a charge.

The chargers are 2 elephants wide with a general elephant base in behind.
The front edge of the chargers has hit the front right corner of the target. This is a legal charge.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
