First impressions

I am a pretty old school gamer at heart, best part of 31 years started on yea ole Acorn Electron heh anyhoo before i go on a tengent.
First impressions. Took me all of about 10 minutes to work to see a good deal of SMAC revitalized for a long awaited time, i love turn based 4x space games of all ilks even some of the really bad ones have a few good mechanics in them to make them shine. Dead lock 1 & 2 Pax imperia, going back a little more millenium 2.2 deuteros again all have some interesting features but are not exactly groundbreaking
I like the game its early days i give you that, it has potential alot in fact however that said something needs to stand out from the rest. It does all seem a little tried and retried.
The Factions are diverse but very flat i cant say i paid much attention to them after my 3rd run through they just became colors.
Diplomacy arrgh i see others have commented and i agree its so frustrating 3 turns 1)offer some credits AI refuses 2) offers me some credits 62ish 3) Demands tribute 9**ish Eh?
Side note just a thought and i guess its probably alot of complexity to implement but i cant say i've seen it any other game but how about The variants in diplomacy work towards a steadier slope between Great friends (alliances) but by getting that all important handshake the two doctrines be it Scientist/Industrialist or any other combination gives a hallmark hash special unit, a fanatic team up with military gets you a Nun with Nuclear Teeth sorry i'm not that creative but i hope you get the idea.
tech tree is cool again a standard race for the cool stuff but i did find i could literally ignore the first weapons tier in early stages.
not sure if any major wonders or epic structure will be implemented so full load out weapon sets at a high cost of course could up the eyebrow muscle usage.
Interface is pretty standard afair could use a touch of gloss or even a unique skin depending on faction played and the colony screen doesn't really give an engrossing amount of detail or let you home in on what it is i should be looking out for its all a little vague imho, first time in the screen is erm can click on that (nope) can i move that erm no, do i have to do this erm guess not.
Sounds/music some good ambience not that i tend to have it running for too long in any games i play.
i know i might sound quite negative its more just some simple comparisons between what i have played and what i look for all in all it is what it is and once i have spent some more serious time playing i can give a better reflection of the game. All in all i think most people have very similar onions and carrots so its all to play for.
Peace out and keep it up guys.
Sypha.
