I played my first two games at the Manchester comp yesterday, with Late Republican Romans. My initial reaction is very positive. The rules are well written and easy to understand, and seem to give a good game.
A couple of rules points came up. Hammy has already mentioned one of them - my cavalry charged a group of 2 deep bow who were on the edge of a forest, so the second rank was in the forest. We weren't sure if the second rank could add to the impact phase combat. It seemed right that it shouldn't (as they can't shoot from the 2nd rank), but the rules weren't clear.
A couple of turns later my cavalry unit were hit in the flank by pikes and were broken, and routed directly away from them, which was sideways across the table. The pikes did not remain in contact, so in the Joint Action Phase the cavalry have to rout directly towards their own table edge. Do they wheel to do this or do they get a free 90 or 180 degree turn if necessary ?
Regarding the layout of the rules, it seems like there are some rules that only appear in the appendicies, and this doesn't seem right to me. For example, "threatened flank" and "rear support" should be defined in the section on Cohesion tests, rather than only appearing in the Glossary of Terms.
Lastly, a couple of other questions from reading the rules :
In the JAP is there a strict sequence of events ? There appears to be from the Full Turn Sequence, where it appears that Rally attempts are made before routers are moved. But in the main rules under the JAP section it states that the active player decides the sequence. It can be important, as broken troops need to be 6 MUs away from enemy before they can be rallied. So if their rout move takes them more then 6 MUs away from enemy they can be rallied, but only if the rally attempt can be made after the rout move.
When moving a commander who was with a BG, is the move distance measured from his actual position on the table, or do you just measure 7 MUs from any part of the BG ?
