Side/rear Armour

My intuition tells me that shooting at a tank from the side or rear increases the chance of penetration (hope it's true), but is there a way to check in game the numbers? to see what exactly changes and how?

yes, armor has front, side, rear and top scores.
front is always strongest. If you press ctrl left click on a unit you can see its profile including armor (if you are on an ipad look to the top right hand corner icons and choose the one with the i [leftmost one]). The way the game figures out the % to hit depends on distance, the gun and the armor. Basically, shooting from side and behind is better and the %age to hit is the final calculation based on what side you are facing.

Thanks, but how can I check how much exactly it is better?

So here is the information bar for a Sherman tank. Any unit you can see you can select it and click the I icon (surrounded with a black line).
It tells you the various stats for the unit. AP attack is the armor related attacks score, that's how much armor the gun can penetrate. Sherman maxes at 169 and each shot will be a random number between 76-169. AP effectiveness is the %age of the total AP attack value that is applied at the distance (1-2-3-5-7+ tiles). AP Accuracy is then a modifier on the chance to hit at different ranges.
Armor is given as f-s-r-t (front-side-rear-top)
i'm not sure of the actual calculation but the final result of whatever calculation of AP attack/AP effectiveness/AP accuracy/movement/unit size has to be above 80 front on and 40 from back and sides

Thanks, that's a great explanation!
