initial impressions

Limited to about an hour tinkering with it -

1. group selection
There seems to be no mechanism to group units so they act as an army - or for military units to act as escorts for a pansy former or colony thingy. I can't see any way of ordering the group to attack, which is any different from selecting them one by one.
2. zoom to unit
There does not seem to be a way to tag a unit or a location with a hotkey so that you zoom to that location/unit with one key-press. This has to be done manually - which can be tedious...
3. selection of city when unit on hex
I can see no way to select the city to modify production, when a unit is on the city. The only way to access the city is to move the unit off. There needs to be a way to cycle through cities and units, at the very least.
*edit*
Clicking on the city name at the bottom of the hex opens the city action interface. This isn't terribly intuitive.

4. Retreat
This does not seem to be an option - in each combat, one lives and the other dies. iirc, even SMAC had some retreat mechanics.
5. keyboard?
There is nowhere to set any keyboard shortcuts. Every game I've seen allows you to configure keyboard shortcuts.
6. production queue
There is no mechanism to move an item up or down the city production queue. All you can do is delete everything and start the list from scratch. If units in production can't be moved back into the queue, that's a design/balance issue - but queue management of items not under construction is awkward.
