Light Lance Vs Heavy Lance

Gents,

I have had a quick look around but found no answer. Is there a reason that Fully Armed Superior Gendarmes with heavy lance cost the same as with light lance yet are clearly at an advantage in Impact?

cheers

To avoid something costing 0.5 points. Heavy Lance is 1, Light Lance is free would be the only other option so the cost was kept the same.

It was a deliberate device to get the historical result - the French need every bit of help they can get...

I never understand the antipathy to the 0.5 point item. Really, what's the problem with something costing 0.5? You can either afford it with points or not.

Do the authors think that people lack the calculation skills to add 20 lots of 0.5, yet somehow have the calculation skills to add 20 lots of 1. It's just a number... it's not rocket science.

In FoG:R 0.5 for light lance and in FoG:AM 0.5 for light spear - I don't see a problem. If you can't do the maths to work out if you're over/under in points then perhaps you can't do the maths to see if you got 1:3 hits.

I am not saying I agree with not including the half a point but then I am a banker by profession and an economist by training so for me it is easy. However I know very many people are frightend by fractions (my mother was a remedial education teacher so I really do know) and decimals. If you want to avoid putting off your target market you remove them. If the difference is enough to put you off the rules so be it but I think you will miss out over something I have never seen be a major issue in my 4 years of playing the game...

Well, of course it's water under the bridge, but the FLIP side to that argument is that there is nothing wrong with charging 4 billion points (hyperbole deliberate) for each BG of naked light infantrymen, and work additions and subtractions from that.

The point (pardon the pun) being that you have the whole world at your fingertips when you're creating a set of rules. Sitting there and saying 'oh, 0.5 points is too difficult to work with' isn't really an excuse. They simply could have doubled the cost of all troops and added 1 for the Light Spear/Light Lance type troops.

Nick would have been happy because he would have had a better chance of using all of his points :)

As I said though, it's water under the bridge... nothing is going to change the rules, so we're stuck with the points as they are.

For future rules writers tho... :)

I'm not convinced that being up by 1 POA in two interactions against enemy troops with specific impact capabilities, one of which is almost never seen "in period" is worth even half a point.... That billion point LF might be less far of the mark than you think!

Well yes,

However why not pay the graduated price for extra abilities even if it is .2 or whatever the fraction needs to be.
In fact these days its all spreadsheet and formula's so you don't need to be able to count because its done for you.

To be fair

a more obvious discrepancy is

Cavalry armoured superior light lance swordsmen 15 pts
Horse armoured superior light lance swordsmen 13

and the cavalry have more minuses for being shot at

so if we are changing things

cheers

Determined Horse, armoured, superior, impact mounted, swordsmen 23 pts

All are even at impact and even in melee, so if we really are changing things..

but back on topic, apart from the couldn't ever be considered anything less than impartial French source, what other evidence is there that the Spanish had a significantly lighter lance than the rest of the Gendarme using world?

Hi Alasdair,

I think this is because they got caught up in the 'cavalry can evade, which is a huge advantage so we'd better cost these into the points score', not taking into account that lance armed cavalry can no longer evade. Maybe the points structure should have been +2 points for battle troops who can evade *shrug*
