Failed assault bug?

Not sure where to post about it, but I've been meaning for a while to write about the odd behavior of failed assaults.
With a successful assault, the attacker take casualties and therefore morale hits even if he's the winner. But in case of failed assaults, the defender does not take any casualties or morale hits. The defender should not come out of it unharmed, should it?
