Comparison with similar games for a newbie

For someone who has never played a game in the commander series... I've watched a few lets play videos and looked at some of the features and screenshots and I wondered if some of the players more familiar with this title could give me a quick overview of what is different about it compared to lets say the Hearts of Iron series from paradox? That series seems to be the most similar one. The obvious difference is that it is hex based of course (which I like since Paradox usually screwed up the provinces anyway), but what are the other main differences from a feature and gameplay point of view?
Thanks

HoI series is a much deeper experience - Commander is a good way to kill a couple of hours, but no where near as immersive. If you like a more in-depth game try Pride of Nations which is comparable but a bit more complicated than the Europa Universalis series - with the massive advantage of being turn based.

I just wanted a comparison, I know Paradox games, but I will never buy one again. I don't like that company. Too unprofessional. i don't like companies that use players as alpha testers and modders as bugfixers and ban people from their forums after complaining about that attitude. HoI III was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

You should check HOI3 with all the expansions and patches. It's a totally different experience.
