Less than a month after the fall of Jerusalem on the 15th of July 1099, the Fatimid field army arrived at the strategic port of Ascalon, about a day's march away. Vizier al-Afdal was unaware that the Crusaders had left Jerusalem and were headed towards his resting army. On the morning of the 12th of August, they closed in quickly in three divisions.
