New Player Questions

Hello everyone!
I finished reading through the rules today, and I am pleased to say I am happy with my investment. I do have a couple of questions.
1) Am I correct in assuming that while in close combat, if both sides get the same number of hits, there would be no cohesion test for either side, but both would have to make death rolls, and then the melee continues into the next turn? I don't recall any direct mention of this, though I do think it is implied.
2) Let us assume, for whatever reason, that Heavy Foot is in terrain that causes Disorder or Severe Disorder. Do these penalties apply any time it is in this terrain, even if the unit doesn't move, or does it only apply on turns that it moves in that terrain? I think I might have movement rules from other wargames interfering with my learning of FoG.
Thanks for the help.

1. Correct. A drawn combat results in no cohesion tests (CT) and since its a draw the death roll dice gets a plus 2, same as when you win.
(An odd thing and worth remembering is that both sides could lose the combat if overlaps are involved)
2. Malus for being in terrain occur at all times the BG has bases in the terrain. Though some only affect the bases actually in the terrain
For example
Movement is reduced as long as any base is in terrain (unless intercept charging which has different rules)
-1 to CT for severe disorder if any base is in terrain
Only bases that are in terrain lose 1 dice per (2 or 3) in combat or shooting. So if only one base is in the terrain dice will not be lost

Just to add a little bit to Phil's answers: the melee will usually continue into the next turn. There are some exceptions:
- if a break off occurs in the Joint Action Phase (e.g. cavalry vs steady foot)
- one of the battle goups might break. e.g. testing for routing friends or a dead general. Or if one side loses a base on the death roll it might take them to the point where they automatically break, so they won't be in melee next turn.
But generally yes, melee's can grind on until one of the battle groups cracks on morale or base losses. Even combats between high morale troops tend to last the longest.

Thanks guys! I'm sure more questions will pop up once I actually get a chance to start playing.

I am plesed that yo like what you have red.
Once yo have played a few games yo will find a lot of questions will be rased. Don't fer posting them here. Can I also suggest reding the rennasence rules. They are relly good.
I tried to use my translator above to get rid if superfluous letters

.Let me know if I did it right.
I guess the question would be... IF slitherine decided upon using color instead of colour (for example) how much smaller would the book have been?

Just remember also that a combat where neither side loses, that yes, you do only take a death roll, but both sides add 2, so ONLY take a death roll if there were 3 or more casualties. There can be a few effects from that. E.g.
Eg- Committed generals can die where no death can occur in the unit.
Eg- A smaller BG can suffer more from these losses than a bigger BG (closer to 25% for future tests etc)
Eg- A pike BG or Spear BG can lose a factor die to no longer being deep enough.
So, whilst it appears not much may happen, it may be a bigger effect than you expect.

I'm sure they will. We've all been there! I found it took about a dozen games before I knew enought of how the games works to stop flicking back and forth in the rules in a frustrated manner so don't be put off.
The best way to learn, if it's an option for you, is to find someone local who plays already. There's an "opponents wanted" area on this web site which can help with that. There are numerous people across the US playing the game so hopefully there'll be someone local to you.
