Can one buy more than one contingent of the same ally?

Interesting question. I'm going to say no - the relevant part in the army book states:

"Allied contingents can only be used if specified in the army list. Most allied contingents have their own allied contingent list, to which they must conform unless the main army's list specifies otherwise"

The second sentence would seem to suggest you are only allowed one bite of the cherry as if you took two allied contingents of the same type you probably wouldn't conform to the allied contingent list. This could then lead to ridiculous situations where one allied list doesn't conform to the minima because of troops taken by another.

The second sentence is also singular rather than plural, suggesting only one contingent.

Of course, others views may vary :) Somebody may be able to dig out an army where there are two allied contingents from the same list?

This was one where I was surprised that I didn't know or couldn't find a clear answer. What I saw could be read consistently with either answer. Surely this must have come up before?

I guess the question is whether the line in the Condotta list about "up to 2 contingents" is intended to be an exception to the normal rule that there can be only one, or an exception to the normal rule that there can be up to 3!

No Spike - that exactly proves my point - since it is specifically specified that two allied contingents are available then it stands to reason that unless this is specified then only one allied contingent is available. That is the point about the question mark.

Perhaps if you thought before you typed it might prove beneficial?

I would say that whenever the exception has been raised, it is clear within the list. In AM the Hoplites spring to mind. In Renaissance a few lists are exceptions and are pretty clearly spenned out. Within ally lists don't they have 1 generals of TC or FC variety? So... you can have 1 if that's the option you take?

Only if the list specifies it Matt. Check out the Early Tang - they can have 2 contingents of Later Horse Nomads for example.

For internal allies - look at the number of Ally Generals permitted. WoTR has 2 - so you can have 2 internal allies.

Do you have a specific one in mind?

And I can find several others Dave I just knew that one existed from memory... Try Later Hindu Indian- Rajput, Three Kingdoms Korean- Shila and Kaya (who can in fact have 3 allied contingents from the same list!), Gallic and probably more.

So taking your answer completely out of context-

You've missed the entire point behind the question. The OP was asking when an army list states you can have allies does that mean you can have multiple allied contingents from that one allied nation. Hence the request for an army that has multiple allied lists from the same ally.

Funny how everybody understood this other than you?

Very amusing Richard, but it didn't answer the question, and since everyone else's answer is irrelevant if you chirp in to a thread please do.

Oh, all right then.

If it doesn't say you can have more than one of any particular foreign ally contingent, you can't.

Quelle surprise.
