im i reading this right if you pick an army from the list at the bottom you some time have the option to have allies so you turn to the army your allowed, do you pick from the main list or the allied section and also what are the differenced between the higher and lower cost? i assume the control distance is greater but i can find any reference to this. sorry if this is obvious but i need someone to clear this up for me

Yes you've got it basically right, you use the Allies section from the other list.

I'm not sure what you mean by the higher and lower costs? If you mean the cost for the commander, the higher number is the cost for a Field Commander, the lower for a Troop Commander. Both work as normal (in terms of command distance etc) but only for the troops within the allied contingent.

One thing that frequently gets missed with allies is that any restriction that applies to the main list (e.g in WoR for Later 30 YW Swedes "No more than half the Infantry Regiments fielded may be Superior") also appplies to any allied contingent created from the Allies section. When I'm checking lists that's probably the most common reason they get returned.

Each of the 5 army list books (as well as the other one) has a lengthy section at the back titled something like "Using these lists to put together your army". This section contains full instructions on how to put together an army from the army lists, including how to include allied contingents.

The section in the main rules on "Commanders" contains an explanation of the differences in capability between different types of commanders, including allied commanders.

And the 6th army list book does too.
