What other games would you recommend?

I'm curious, what other games are you playing and which ones would you recommend?
I've recently noticed that I'm playing far, far fewer games than I used to. I've spent years playing Hearts of Iron 3 (with expansions and mods), but eventually I got bored by it and I doubt that I will return to the game anytime soon. Sometimes I play Civilization IV with expansions, but this game has severe pacing problems, so I finish most of started games in the middle "phase". Besides that, well, it seems that modern games are far too short or are low quality stuff, at least in my opinion, which means that few products grab my attention for long. I'm a big cRPG fan, but most of the cRPGs I love are pretty old (Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, TESIII: Morrowind, KOTOR etc.) and excluding games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and The Witcher 1 and 2, few newer ones are to my liking. I liked ME1 and ME2, but ME3's ending pissed me off so much that I cannot force myself to play either of these games again. I cannot stand Oblivion and Skyrim. I'm also not much into standard shooters, which bore me to death.
I don't know, but I have a feeling that I'm missing sth. Surely there must be sth else worth playing? I'm waiting with anticipation for some titles, mostly stuff coming from Kickstarter, e.g. Torment: Tides of Numenera (F*CK YEAH! It's being made!) and Project Eternity, but I have a problem finding good released games... Any suggestions?

There are so many great games. I'm generally not interested in shooters, action games, sims, etc (although I occasionally play one a little). So I can only reply about strategy games really.
But some of the games that I enjoy a lot are:
All SSG games (Battles in Italy, Battles in Normandy, Kharkov, Across the Dnieper 2, Battlefront) (best PBEM but some scenarios are good vs AI)
HPS Panzer Campaign Series (Stalingrad, Moscow 41, Smolensk 41, etc)
World in Flames and other boardgames PBEM using Vassal or Cyberboard (all PBEM)
Decisive Campaigns Case Blue (although I haven't touched this in 6+ months)
Strategic Command games from Battlefront, I'd recommend looking at the soon-to-be-released Assault on Communism Expansion
There is an old game called Stalingrad and another called Operation Crusader from Atomic Games that I used to play and absolutely love PBEM - but to run them I think you have to use DOSBOX or some other emulator program. I plan to find an opponent and PBEM them again sometime soon - just have to figure out how to find an opponent.
Age of Wonders Shadow Magic (vs AI)
Disciples II (vs AI)
Maybe I'm forgetting some but those are the ones that I spend most of my time on and like the most.

Thanks. I will check some of them

. I know Disciples II, but I'm not a big fan of it. Not my kind of fantasy and I enjoyed HoMM3's battles sooooo much more.

Hi jjdenver,
I still own Operation Crusader and some other titles of that series, like Market Garden, Velikije Luki, Gold-Juno-Sword and D-Day. I too loved them a lot ... very fine games in PBEM. If I could figure out how to get them to run (they were still on 3,5" floppies) I would definitely like to play them again.

To run them get d-fend reloaded:
http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/
This tutorial tells you how to set up d-fend reloaded and install a game. it's a little old so don't choose "wizard" option when adding a game, choose manual and then pick dosbox not windows game (you'll see what I mean when you go through tutorial):
http://www.myabandonware.com/howto/
Before you run that tutorial download Stalingrad at one of these places:
http://www.abandonia.com/games/848/
http://www.myabandonware.com/game/world ... 2#download
then unzip stalingrad into the folder that you get during step 3 of the d-fend tutorial above
Then start the game through d-fend. that's all there is to it - very simple.
If you want to play a pbem game then send me a PM or email me. I'd prefer Stalingrad but I could probably go for Op Crusader or Invasion America (if I get allied side in that one

)

Great stuff! Got Stalingrad up and running in a couple of minutes. Now I just need some time to get back into the game, and then we can go for a PBEM. I'll pm you as soon as I'm ready.

I forgot: do you have a copy of the game manual? Stalingrad is the only game from this series I do not own.

No, in fact I threw out my copy of Stalingrad incl manual and box and disks about 2 yrs ago when moving. I just found a copy on ebay for 17 bucks and bought it to get the manual again. But it's not too different than Crusader and America Invades in terms of mechanics, so if you have those you can use their manual.
*EDIT*: I just found a great resource. You can DL the manual here. replacementdocs.com - just search for Stalingrad and DL it. Great web site!
