a situation arose in a game last night that i couldn't find in the rule book(i might have missed something i am old)

i had a BG that was charged in the rear they losted the impact but by some miracle they won the melee, the attacking unit broke off(there was some debate whether they could but anyway) my question is which direction would they be facing? the direction they where travelling or the direction they where facing in the melee

I believe when you break off you move to your own rear, so they would have moved backwards.

I think you are asking whether troops that have turned 180 in the movement phase after being hit in the rear in impact can then get a free 180 turn in the Joint action phase if the troops who charged them have broken off.

The answer is to be found by consulting the index, which will give you a page reference for the section of the rules covering moves in the joint action phase. This is probablybfoundnin e section of the rules covering The Joint Action Phase. If this move is not listed in that section it doesn't exist, whereas if is listed it does exist.
