More impressions

Ok, so after playing a few more hours on a new game there are some things that stick out to me once I started interacting with other factions:
Losing cities, which is kind of a big deal, sort of happens in passing. Half the time I don't even realize it until the event pops up on my next turn. I'd think a city under attack and/or falling would capture the camera view and probably pop up a dialog.
Can aircraft capture cities? I think that just happened to me. Again I didn't see it happen, just caught the notification.
The AI seems really impulsive. I'll make them an offer which they'll accept and then the next turn they'll cancel it or declare war on me.
Is there a way to tell if a unit on the map is an enemy or ally without selecting it an looking at the highlight color? (I'm assuming that's what the red/white means) Might be a good thing to show when you hover the mouse over them.
Also I'm still not sure I understand how food and minerals work. I think they're both global pools that cap the growth and production respectively of each city. Is that right?
