The sections of the rules explaining "protection" are
- The Glossary of Terms, page 173, ("Protection") which defines "protection" and when it applies
and
- the section headed "Protection" in the purple edged rule section on "The Combat Mechanism" on pages 125 and 126 which explains the effect of protection in the combat mechanisms.

To count as protected by an adjacent file of pike, the shot have to be in the same battle group - i.e. that type of protection only applies to mixed BGs of pike and shot.

The Glossary of Terms, page 173, ("Protection") defines "protection" and spells out in some detail when it applies.
This includes explaining very explicitly whether protection can or cannot be caused/claimed by adjacent elements from two separate units.

All I've done is suggest that you read the relevant bit of the rules.
Whatever your question regarding the rules, the answer is always found by reading the section of the rules that covers that issue.
Reading the rules is also usually quicker and easier than going online and asking someone else - as all they will do is read the rules too...

I haven't interpreted any rules - If you look back, i haven't even actually answered any of your questions.
All I've done is to suggest that you read the relevant section of the rules for each query you have posted
You've actually found your own answers by reading the relevant bit of the rules.

Mr Madaxeman,
Having read the rules carefully, I can't find where it says how I beat you!
What page is that on? I need to read that up before Thursday!

It's not so much a rule as an interpretation:
Take nothing but unprotected poor troops woth no weapons, roll nothin but 5's.
You'll find the rule interpretation on the QRS.
