just started my first fog-r game and understand artillery have to make a CMT to unlimber but dose this mean they are ready to fire that move or do they have to wait until the following shooting phase?

Artillery cannot fire in any turn in which they move. So, if they unlimber in your turn they cannot fire until the shooting phase in your opponent's next turn.
