Impetuous questions

Yesterday Lionel and I had a game to test new lists and armies in order to make up our mind for the PARIS Clichy beta test tournament and a situation arose that took us time to solve :

Lionel had some off spearmen in front of LH at 2+ MU. After a wheel of half MU his spearmen could charge my HF.
We considered that he had to test not to charge as he could contact HF without beeing intercepted by mounted (LH cannot intercept non-skirmishers)
Beeing impetuous, he now has to charge the BG nearest to straight ahead which was the LH...

We have then a situation where a BG is made impetuous due to a HF BG and which finally charges skirmishers which it didn't have to charge in the first place !?!

Lionel eventually decided to charge voluntarily the HF with a wheel to avoid this problem as with this impetuous move, my HF coud have intercept him on the flanc...

Did we make any mistake ?

Ok I get it now. I think you did it correctly.

The problem is largely the column. Were the formtation 2 or 3 wide wide then both would probably be contactable and chargeable even if it wer to the flank, or only 1 being the SP would be as the press forwards would be insufficient. Then it would have sme choices.

As it is I find the rationale reasonable. Spearmen want to get stuck inand feel under threat. They want to deal with the spears but in fact can only do so by chasing away the LH first. The enemy spears have them in a bit of a tangle and can give them a rough time for a bound before they can do much about it. Feels ok to me and correct. If the Red Sp surive the flank contact they will turn and fight the enemy spears and hopefully slog their way out of the mess, but the first round is going to be very swaety indeed!

Solution as far as I can tell is: 1) Don't be in a column that close to enemy HF. 2) And avoid letting a powerful unit around your flank.
