Sequence of pursuits

We had 2 combats occurring alongside each other, both resulting in someone dropping to wavering and needing to retire. A and B are Russian, X and Y are French. A beat X but but Y beat B.

AA BB
XX YY

X retires and A can't catch them, but Y is in 2MUs of where X was and in range of A's pursuit. However, Y needs to pursue B but hasn't yet moved. Can A pursue into Y? Alternatively, if Y only pursues 1MU and is still in range of A, can A divert into Y?

A will go haring off after X and will not be around for Y's pursuit as it is done first (assuming the French is the active player). Y's only pursuit will be towards B.

Outcome moves are not simultaneous. The Outcome Moves table shows the sequence in which units are moved.

Yes A is the active player but since X retires further than A's pursuit move A has the option of deviating into an enemy within 2 MUs of Xs starting point. Therefore he seems to be able to hit Y before Y can make a pursuit move. Seems odd?

I guess that''s the advantage of being the active player! Howeve can A actually contact Y when it is still technically "in combat" with B?

Because all retire moves are done first no one is in contact anymore. The question is whether the active player's pursuit happens before the non active player's and therefore can hit him before he moves.

looking at the chart it would seem the active player gets first move so has the option to move into contact with the opposing unit before their pursuit starts.
Perhaps we need Terry to wade in on this one with an opinion.

They aren't simultaneous.

The non-active player retires then the active player pursues. Then the active player retires and the non-active player pursues.

This means the active player can pursue into an enemy. If the active unit contacts the non-active unit before half its move is completed then conmbat will be immediate but the active player's other unit will still retire.

All retires are made before any pusuits are made. This means that a pursuing unit can contact a different retiring enemy unit within 2MU of its path - IF it cannot contact the unit it is supposed to be pursuing.

It may be prudent to amend the Combat Outcome chart to read this way. At the moment it has an active player pusuit right after the non-active player's retirement
