Here are grouped and published for the first time all my scenarios, designed in order to recreate abstract and hypothetical battles between starter armies of the period covered by the various expansions of the game.
The armies have been designed taking care:
- of the suggestions coming from the list present in the DAG engine,
- of my knowledge of the subject, mainly refined reading Osprey books and other military classics,
- of some personal linguistic researches,
- of my individual taste about what was the flavour of a determined ancient army,
- of the playability of the scenario, favouring battles with equal odds rather than unbalanced ones,
- of a self elaborated cost list of the single units, that mainly diminishes the expenses for mounted BGs, in my opinion greatly overvalued in the game in respect of their real strength.
The maps have been generally designed using Google Earth data of locations inside the territory where the armies should have probably operated.
The covered scenarios are the following.

Thank’s for the comments, Amenofi and Micha!
I’d also like to stress that some of the battles (namely that of the Byzantines, Achaemenids and Zangids armies) may be played linked together as in a campaign mode, using the following plan.

Basic Campaign Rules
The campaign is divided in separate phases, each encompassing a determined number of battles and to jump from a phase to the other the player has to fulfill some minimal achievements, expressed in a preset number of points.
In each phase points are awarded in regard of the outcome of the single battles, that may end with:
- a strategical victory / 3 pts.
- a tactical victory / 2 pts.
- a marginal victory / 1 pt.
- a draw / = pts.
- a marginal defeat / -1 pt.
- a tactical defeat / -2 pts.
- a strategical defeat / -3 pts.
Draws happens accordingly to the Fog rules.
Instead, to determine if a victory is marginal, tactical or strategical firstly the BG difference will be comprehensively calculated counting in positive for the winner the number of BGs lacking to reach the loss threshold and counting in negative for the looser the number of BGs overpassing it.
Example:
Venetians (34/39) = +5 / Milanese (47/41) = -6
BG difference = Venetians +11.
Then the above mentioned result will be compared to the total BG of the two armies and, if using the formula
a : b = x : 100
where
a = is the BG difference between the two armies
b = is the total BGs of both armies
x = is the data to find
this last will show
- a result up to 5 then a marginal victory will be achieved,
- a result from 5,01 to 15 then a tactical victory will be achieved,
- a result over 15 then a strategical victory will be achieved.
Example:
Venetians BG difference +11
Total BGs 39+41 = 80
11 : 80 = x : 100
11 x 100 = 1.100
1.100 : 80 = 13.75
Tactical Victory
If the minimal achievement required at the end of each phase isn’t fulfilled the campaign stops. Otherwise the player jumps to the next phase retaining the result already gained and adds it to the results of the new battles.
According to the state of progress reached at the end of the campaign the player will have then assigned one of the following final evaluations:
Outstanding
Excellent
Good
Fair
Ordinary
Humble
Disheartening
Dismal
Disastrous
Infamous
Justinian Byzantine Campaign
Phase I
Byzantine – Sassanids
Byzantine – Vandals I
Byzantine – Vandals II
Results
-9 / -5 pts. - Campaign stops (Infamous Outcome)
The shameful defeats of your army have prompted riots during which you are killed by an enraged crowd that throw your body outside the city so that the wild beasts may devour forever the memory of your contemptible deeds!
-4 / -2 pts. - Campaign stops (Dismal Outcome)
Though some initial successes seemed to promise a different development of events, the following string of dishonorauble defeats led you to completely loose confidence in yourself, so that committing suicide seemed the only way to recover at last a bit of your past reputation.
-1 / +1 pts. - Campaign stops (Humble Outcome)
The poor handling of the military affairs has quickly emptied the empire’s treasury and undeceived your commanders and the soldiers. Glory days passed you by and now a gloomy future looms over your last years of reign ..
+2 and more – Campaign progresses (jump to the next phase)
Your assertive and determined approach has earned you the loyalty of the army and the money needed for further military feats ..
Phase II
Byzantine – Nobatians
Byzantine – Ostrogoths I
Byzantine – Slavs I
Results
-7 / -5 pts. - Campaign stops (Disastrous Outcome)
Your military incompetence is not tolerated any more by the member of the Court that exiles you in a monastery after cutting your nose and ears and hand over the nation to a new Emperor.
-4 / -2 pts. - Campaign stops (Disheartening Outcome)
The gradual weakening of the empire’s military virtues, owed to your blameworthy carelessness, has led to your spontaneous resignation and the idly retirement in a rural mansion.
-1 / +3 pts. - Campaign stops (Ordinary Outcome)
Every of your victory was soon followed by a defeat so that the spoils and praises of the good days were wasted in the ensuing events, leaving the empire without territorial losses but also deprived of any glory’s dream.
+4 and more – Campaign progresses (jump to the next phase)
Your assertive and determined approach has earned you the loyalty of the army and the money needed for further military feats ..
Phase III
Byzantine – Ostrogoths II
Byzantine – Visigoths
Byzantine – Slavs II
Byzantine - Franks
Results
-8 / -6 pts. (Dismal Outcome)
Though some initial successes seemed to promise a different development of events, the following string of dishonorauble defeats led you to completely loose confidence in yourself, so that committing suicide seemed the only way to recover at last a bit of your past reputation.
-5 / -2 pts. (Disheartening Outcome)
The gradual weakening of the empire’s military virtues, owed to your blameworthy carelessness, has led to your spontaneous resignation and the idly retirement in a rural mansion, far away from the capital and the concerns of government.
-1 / +2 pts. (Humble Outcome)
The poor handling of the military affairs has finally emptied the empire’s treasury and undeceived your commanders and the soldiers. Glory days passed you by and now a gloomy future looms over your last years of reign ..
+3 / +6 (Ordinary Outcome)
Each of your victory was soon followed by a defeat so that the spoils and praises of the good days were wasted in the ensuing events, substantially leaving the empire in its previous shape, having fulfilled only few of the promises arisen at the moment of your ascension to the throne.
+ 7 / + 11 (Fair Outcome)
Your tactical skill has been displayed in many battles and the Empire has grown richer and more confident in his strength. New palaces and churches have been built with the wealth derived from the new conquests and your name is widely respected in the Empire!
+12 / +15 (Good Outcome)
Under your strong military leadership many provinces have been added to the Byzantine’s lands, which now spreads far and wide, while peasants and nobles together admire your handsome profile on the coins minted to celebrate your victories!
+16 / +20 (Excellent Outcome)
Thanks to your military achievements the Byzantines are now regarded as one of the biggest power around the Mediterranean and beyond. Not only the citizens of the Empire pay homage to the statues erected everywhere to celebrate your great deeds but also abroad your name is pronounced with fear and admiration!
+21 and more ((Outstanding Outcome)
After the crushing defeats of everybody who dared to confront you, the Empire’s lands stretch all over the known world and diplomats of distant kingdoms flocks to the capital in order to offer gifts, peace treaties and promises of fealty. Your name will be remembered and revered in history as one of the greatest military commander!
*Sudden Death Rule
If the Commander in Chief (representing the Emperor) is killed during a battle the campaign immediately stops at the end of the clash, with one of the following results.
- 9 / - 6 (Dismal Outcome)
At the news of your death the citizens and the army sighed with relief hastening to proclaim a new Emperor. Your name is still remembered as one of the worse Byzantine rulers in history.
-5 / -2 (Humble Outcome)
Nobody seemed to regret your premature loss, while your name was relegated in a little chapter of the annals talking of the dark moments of the Empire.
-1 / +1 (Ordinary Outcome)
Your death was decorously, though quickly, mourned in the capital but some historians claim your reign at least allowed the survival of the Empire in harsh times of war.
+2 / +12 (Fair Outcome)
Though the entire nation regretted the fact that a bad fate prevented the reaching of wider achievements, the sacrifice of your life at the head of the troops remained for the future as a leading example for all the later commanders.
+12 and more (Excellent Outcome)
At the unexpected news that you have fallen on the battlefield fighting as a lion huge dismay and widespread sorrow arose as much in the cities as in the countryside.
Still today you remain as one of the most revered and beloved Emperors of the whole Byzantine history!
