FoG digital Renaissance - pushing the envelope

I know that FoG wasn't intended to cover this, but I've designed a few Renaissance scenarios which might be of interest to some players. A few have already made it to to the standard scenario directory (thanks Keith) but these are several new ones. A few thoughts:

- I've always juggled the numbers to make them even points games, in order to maintain competitiveness
- several unit types aren't standard to the usual rules: e.g. most later arquebusier units are Medium, not Light, infantry and hence won't evade (except for genuine skirmishers like 'enfants perdus'), I've used armoured, drilled, firearm cavalry to represent Huguenot 'Millers' and German reiters, etc.
- I've tried to find the closest figures to those I'm trying to represent, but the system isn't intended to stretch into the 1500s, so I had to make some compromises. I really could have done with some colourful Landsknechts, or armoured cuirassiers though. Hopefully none of my choices are completely ridiculous for the unit types they're trying to portray
- I will submit these to the official scenario editors, but I know they have an understandable tendency to amend units so that they fit within the official FoG types, which won't work for these somewhat experimental scenarios
- I've had to use crossbows for arquebusiers: sometimes the editor won't allow drastic alterations like using Firearms but extending the ranges over two hexes. I'm happy enough with making reiters armoured, firearm cavalry, but would have liked to make Huguenot Millers non-firearm but Swordsmen+, in order to simulate their retaining their pistols for use in melee: again, the editor just won't allow it

All that said, I think these aren't too bad at portraying the battles that I've chosen. I couldn't include some of the more interesting ones in this period that involved extensive field fortifications (e.g. Cerignola 1503, Ravenna 1512, or Arques 1589, as there's no way, short of making the defenders Immobile, of preventing the entrenched side from leaping out of their defences on Turm One and charging cheerfully to their fate.

Comments and criticisms welcome

Thank you for this.
I purchased a game made by john Tiller about Renaissance battles but it was a dissapointment.
Bad graphism and complicated nerv and funkilling rules. So your scenarios are wellcome.
I must confess i wasn"t aware Fog is able to cover the timeperiode of Renaissance.
Would be great if you do more scenarios.

Greetings

Micha

Cheers Micha but I have to be honest and say that a certain suspension of disbelief is required in order to fit the later Renaissance battles into the FoG Ancients system, although I think it's worth the effort. Speaking personally I'd very much prefer to see an FoG Renaissance digital version released, rather than yet another angle on the Ancients system ('Wolves from the Sea', anyone?), and I'd pay for it.

Or, as a compromise, the release of an update using the Ancients system, but with a range of figures suitable for the Renaissance - musketeers, landsknechts, reiters, cuirassiers, etc.

A Fog- "Renaissance" would be a great thing, i would also pay for it.
For the waiting time there is a freewaregame namned "Field of Strategie ". It contains a few Renaissance campaigns.
Ok ; the optic is not to compare with Fog but untill we have nothing else its a good substitute from my few.

Two more for the 21 players who've looked at the earlier ones: Kerestes 1596AD, a large encounter battle between a Hapsburg Imperialist army and the Ottoman Turks, and - two years and a continent away - The Yellow Ford 1598 AD, with a small Anglo-Irish relief force attempting to move from Armagh to the Blackwater Fort, and running into the main Irish Catholic field army en route. Same caveats regarding units as before.

Convalescing from a back operation at the moment so a little time on my hands: three more Renaissance scenarios using - and bending  - the FoG Ancient engine:

Agnadello 1509 - the end of Venice as a European land power: Marignano 1515 - the first time the Swiss were stopped in a century; & Ceresole 1544 - a large encounter battle between the Hapsburg Imperialists and the French towards the end of the Italian Wars.

And another, with the Ottoman Turks outflanking the Mamluk's defensive lines outside Cairo: the Battle of Raydaniyah, 1517 AD. Again, even points and some non-standard FoG units to cover this later period.

Nice and good work, to use Hussits icons for Mammelukes is not a problem from my fiew to make this battle possible.
A question, do you owne " Rennaissance " from HPS Games ?

There are a number of Renaissance battles in my batch of scenarios that may be of interest. They include one of my favourites - Pavia 1525 - as well as the Tudor battles in Scotland, Flodden 1513, Ancrum Moor 1545 and Pinkie Cleuch 1548 (includes warships!). I also did a Nine Years War selection, which includes Yellow Ford 1598 as well. I think this was the one that I took great liberties with because the English were ambushed in column in real life whereas I have portrayed it as a more conventional battle - I think it works ok too. Kinsale 1601 is my favourite from these Irish battles.

If any of the links do not work, please let me know and I will try and put things right. I haven't used Dropbox for about 6 months now.

One of the things that cothyso make eventually be able to help us with is to provide a small number of Renaissance troop types for the scenario editor. Definitely we need arquebusiers, maybe we could have some more mobile artillery too. Just so that we can render 16thC battles a bit more accurately.

A great idea ! At the moment i"m going to make planes for the 30 years war. I had in mind to create scenarios for Medival 2.
If we had 1600 Units in Fog i could do this scenarios also for Fog.
I"m interested in 30 years war, 7 years war and the german "Peasent"-War.

Those would be great! Also the English Civil War and the French wars of the 17th century, the Great Conde and Marshal Turenne.
