You do get a bonus for using them against armour.
In addition you get the option to take stakes with some longbow armies.
Also many longbow are sword armed.

???
Do you mean they should get a longer range?
Well you will set off a huge debate about which type of bow was best. But considering effective range with an assualt rifle is 300m I think all the ranged weapons in FoG do quite well.

I think that's a good example. The 'real' effective range is between 50-100m. I.e. you don't generally 'effectively engage' an enemy outside those ranges. I doubt anyone could (except for luck) hit a target on a two way range at much greater than 100m.

Firing a bow is like a 1 pound swallow carrying a 2 pound coconut.
Its a simple strength to weight ratio thing. You can only fire it as far as your strength allows. And certainly not from Africa to Europe.

Perhaps a longbow can shoot longer than other bows, perhaps not. But the ranges in FOG are not "how long can you shoot an arrow". They are more "at what range do a body of archers have a reasonable chance of affecting the enemy". Additionally, there are balances between missile ranges and shooting. The most important one for longbows being thwat dismounted French men at arms will take two long range shots, then two short range shots before they can get stuck in.

It just depends on how you use the longbow troops on battle which will definitely hit a lot of foes than using average"-rated crossbowmen.
