Battle of Ortona

Hello,

I'd like to find 5 players interested in doing a Battle of Ortona tourney using the lovely map created by Amaris (with MP, and more, work by Jon). I'll play too, so 6 players total (though if there's a good response I might add another player for 7 total). Everyone will get a game as the Canadians, and as the Germans.

Either post here, or shoot me a PM if interested in joining and once we have 6 players total then everyone can go to. Simple tourney so the rules are minimal:

1) You can, of course, play as many games at a time as you want. Set them up, PM a password to your opponent, and post your start.
2) 14 day maximum to take a turn (else your game is forfeited.) Please let me, and your opponent know if you have to take that long between turns.
3) No points, just a straight win/loss record. If we have a tie between two players for most victories then a one round playoff to determine ultimate victor. Sides to be chosen by the players unless you'd prefer I roll a die.
4) Post like this when you start a game and when you finish a game. Following format: Game Started: "name" (Allies) vs "name" (Germans); then: Game Finished: "name" (Allies) vs "name" (Germans) - Germans (or Allies) win

(How to download (courtesy of Jon):

1. Run BA on your Mac, PC or iPad
2. Choose Campaigns (at the bottom)
3. Choose Download Community Scenarios (at the top)
4. Choose Download a Campaign Package from the Internet (top right)
5. Type http://bit.ly/BA88ortona into the URL box
6. Click the green tick
7. Back at the campaigns list, select "Ortona MP" and click Download the Selected Campaign (bottom centre)
8. This should download everything that you need
9. Go back to the first page of BA and choose Multiplayer
10. Log in to Multiplayer as normal
11. Either go to the My Challenges tab and create a New Challenge. This list will now show the Ortona MP...
12. Or go to the Accepts Challenges tab and look for an opponent...)

A few notes:
Ortona is a large scale urban combat map, a lot of turns, a lot of units available. While the number of units may seem excessive for tourney play they do go quickly.
Scouts are your friend.
There are 7 VP Flags, always keep at least one flag or you lose.
Swap, Merge, Walking Mortars are all available.
Some units are pre-promoted.
The Germans have a swimming pool.

I'll try and post some map pictures below.

Here's a bit more information on the battle:

Monsoeren, that's great. Welcome aboard.

Here's a link with a bit more info on the map. Jon started this thread when he created the MP. You'll find more map pics here (I couldn't get my iPad to cooperate on sizing the others I took, for some reason.)

I'm also in. This is a massive map so it'll take a while to get it done.

This is one of my favorite maps but I'm learly of the time commitment (and of kingt!)..
so right now I'm undecided.. how many games does it work out to play? 12-14?

Justin,

It ends up being 12 games. It is a large, but active, map. I get the concern over time to participate and that's why I thought a two week turn window was acceptable. Everyone should play more often than that but if you can't fully commit for a bit you've got that cushion.

Heck, I'm leery of each person who's signed up so far. :D

Hey Arctic, that's a great plan!

A few of the guys have been asking me to fix the dreaded French House 4 errors for awhile now (where about ten of the FrenchHouse4's in Ortona have 30% cover instead of the usual 63% for buildings, and tanks can hide in them, setting up some rather nasty shocks for the unwary)... Since you're about to run an awesome tourney on Ortona, I've just fixed as many as I could find... All houses should now offer the correct cover, and vehicles won't be able to pass through 'em any more...

Download in the usual way (above)... it's v1.2

Ortona is probably my favourite map for BA... Anytime Amaris puts together a map, it's worth paying attention because imho nobody makes battle maps like Amaris can!

I'd love to join your tourney, but I've got some professional exams coming up, and I'll be tied up with GJS'44 and getting the Carpiquet round of the Normandy Ninja tourney kicked off... I don't want to slow you guys down, but would be happy to play anyone for one-off Ortonas, even tho I can't join your tourney properly...

From what I remember of our Hillman games, you're going to do well mate!

Btw, let me know when you've got the nicknames of all of your tourney players... I'll ping you an Excel file that will automatically track your results... Has some formulae in it, but should work in Numbers too, if that's your preferred poison...

Good luck everyone!! Ortona is a killer... but there's no better training ground for urban warfare in BA...

Ortona should last long enough let's go ahead and start with the 4 players we have, then if we get another player or two before being too close to finished they can join.

I've opened two games, one Axis and one Allied. Both with password: arctic

Jon,

That's great. Thanks for your help on setting the map; man, I wish I'd known I could drive through a house or two when playing JT. Want us to let you know if we come across any more map problems?

I'm taking you up for the one off Ortona offer too. I've set up an extra game for us with me as Allies, password: arctic

My pleasure Arctic.
Challenge accepted. Haven't played this one in awhile, so go easy on me, hehe. Good luck!

Do you still have a spot left for another player? New to this map and to the players named here. I've around 50 completed BA PBEM games under my belt. Feel rather errr terrified at putting my hat in the ring for this.....
