defence

now playing online against real people what a difference it makes to a game but now i must defend for the first time and i need to slow the enemy down or stop them from taking cities to quickly what are the best forms of defence would you say which units can hold out by themselves against say two attackers if need be what kind of terrain is best held by which units to slow the attacker how should i place my units to best effect i am well aware any defence will fail in time but what can i do to maximize my defensive lines delay delay delay been my prime objective

close-in arty is always helpful. Depending on air threats, you need to consider some AA too, which you do not tend to use that often. Pak 43s are nice too, especially when protected by AA and arty.

Forest is easiest terrain for defence because you can use cheap infantry units there to slow down enemy. Usually tanks/recon units come first and they cant do much harm for infantry without artillery support. Tanks and tank destroyers are best for open areas, but you'll need 3 or more of them if you want clear results. Artillery is always bonus especially when tracked but useless if you dont have much other units. Try to keep your army mobile. You can't win if you only focus on defence. Counter attacks buy you valuable time. Always try to flank behind enemy. Also good trick is sending cheap recon units behind enemy lines because opponent have to use 2-3 units to hunt down one.

It's very hard to give precise tips when it's not clear what map you are playing. :)
