outcome move that can't be made

In our game today we had an odd situation we were not sure how to handle.
The French Hussars charged a unit of Austrian Cuirassier who counter charged. Then a second unit of French Hussars crossed a river and ended up about 1/2 MU behind the Cuirassier.
After the cavalry melle we both ended up Disordered, checking the outcome moves as the non active player I should have broken off and fallen back, but with the Hussars directly to my rear there was no where I could go. Since we had both taken even hits we had the Hussars make an outcome move instead.

Should we have just stayed in contact in this situation or was making the active player make the outcome move the proper thing to do?

An interesting situation.
I'd rule the following:
The non-active player should retire but cannot - We therefore assume that it has retired even though it can't move (assume 0.1 of a mm).
The Active player should now not be in contact - therefore will pursue. Since it will contact the enemy in the first half of its (supposed) pursuit a second round of combat should occur immediately.

Thanks Terry, had not considered a second round of combat in that one.
