Any tips on painting blackened armour (28mm cuirassiers) to make it look interesting and show up the separate plates/bands?

Paint it black and highlight it dark grey
-or-
Paint it black and highlight 'edge chips' in gunmetal.

paint black, drybrush gunmetal (as usual to do normal armour) then paint again in black artists ink.

For my 15mm figures I undercoated black.
Dry brushed with gun metal.
Washed with black ink.
Dry brushed again with gun metal.
No reason it shouldn't work with 25mm.

Thanks guys.
So far I have Primed black, dry-brushed white and given a wash of black. It looks pretty satisfactory so far. I want them to look as black as possible while showing highlights (hence no gunmetal).

That's what I did with my Germans, it looks OK.

You can also add a touch of blue to the gun metal.
