Infantry interpenetrating guns

Hi, yesterday I had a situation that I hadn't seen before (I haven't played with or against early Tercios).

The situation was my enemy had a pair of guns about 1/2" in front of his Early Tercio (boy, are they tough to beat up????).

So, I start to threaten his guns with my P&S and he decides to attack rather than tuck in behind the guns. Now, what he did was mark where the guns were and walk his guys forward to stand ON the position where the guns were. As it turns out, he stayed like that for the entire battle. So, he bever actually completed the interpenetration.

I didn't bother to look it up in the rules... my opponent was the comp organiser and he seemed pretty confident so just took it as one of those situations I wasn't familiar with and he got no advantage out of it... but was this done right? I can see situations where it WOULD be beneficial.

Don't worry - comp organiser admitted he got it wrong...
