what advantage do you get from artilery. in the fog r rules as far as i can see you dont get any + (or extra dice) for shooting at close range

I agree it seems odd that they get no advantage at close range, but that's the way the rules are written so I have to suck it up.

Artillery get the advantage of incredible range. I don't think I've played a game where arty DIDN'T fire on the first bound. They also give -ve modifiers to cohesion tests.

They are, in my opinion, quite worth the points.

The thinking is that the historical use of artillery in this period did not include widespread use of short range anti-personal rounds such as grape and canister therefore when firing at a formed body of troops range does not make enough difference to be worth a PoA change at any point.

don't get me wrong i think the fogr rules far better than say the WRG rule for this period that i used 20 odd years ago but i seamed to remember you used to get a bonus for artillery used at close range

Just goes to show how poor and unhistoric the WRG rules were (and I loved them at the time) - grapeshot in the 1600's? I don't think so!!!!

Artillery is powerful enough and needs no short range bonus. Jim

It was used by Swedish 3pdrs in the 1630s - but they're RGs so the argument re the rules for bases of Artillery (rather than markers) still applies.
