Superior hit Reduction: Only When Assaulting?

The books says "assaulting superior" units reduce fire hits by one. The QRS says "any superior" unit reduces fire (not specified as assaulting).

Which is it?

I would say that the book outrules the QRS. So it's assaulting superior troops.

So does a large superior unit reduce hits by 2?

I'm afraid not! It's large OR superior, not both. Therefore you can only ever reduce hits during assaults by one.

We Austrians wish it was 2 but the Gods of written rules decided otherwise :P

That is worth noting. I can now split out my 1793-1795 french from 6 base units to 4 base units, making it easier to achieve the 4x if units per mixed div :)

Just remember that is only when being shot at as you assault. Only large units reduce combat hits by one.

Dead. and I will be running 1792 versions next time around. I've found it "challenging" to be able to form up an 800 point Armee du Nord. I basically end up with 12 infantry units and one poor cavalry unit. The army will be pinned by Austrian cavalry and hacked to pieces. The '4 infantry units per division' makes for almost no flexibility at all at 800 points. We are going to try 900 and I'll see if I can actually end up with a viable French army.

I have no problem forming 3 infantry divisions plus a cavalry division from the 1792 Armee du Nord.
CC - Skilled - 50pts
3xDC - Competent - 90pts
1x4 Line a/d - 40pts
3x4 Line a/c - 84pts
5x4 Garde s/c - 220pts
2x6 Garde p/c - 60pts
1x4 Light a/d - 48pts
3x skirm att - 24pts
3x art att - 40pts
total = 656pts
Leaving 144pts to create a 3 unit cavalry division.

Quality might not be good - but then it shouldn't be during this period.

Ya, am slowly getting there with it. It is just a very different army. I think I will follow Brett's advice and leave off the artillery. I was trying to keep all the conscripts in large units but the superiors probably don't need that if they plan to get into contact fast.
