When a tactical or strategic air unit attacks a hex containing a resource, land or naval unit. the nearest fighter group in range engages in air-to-air combat with the attacking unit. Can anyone tell me whether this applies (or should apply) when the target being attacked is a fighter unit?
I am in a PBEM match with Irish Dragoon Guards, and during the course of one turn, he made what appear to be multiple attacks on the same fighter unit. It was reduced to "2" strength by the attacks. Immediately adjacent to either side of this unit were two more fighter units. They did not react. Should they have reacted?

nope - you can gang up on fighters.
I might be to blame if he's only jsut discovered that...I did it to him a cuople of days ago on about T3 of our game with him as the axis - he shipped 1 fighter to the French front as poland was falling, so I attacked it with all 3 RAF and FAF air units....only got it down to 5 tho

Yes, a fighter being attacked count as intercepting so it wont get help from other fighters. This make the air wars intense and you have to keep the distance else it would be not so good attacking since you will be up against 2 enemy air.

Thanks for the prompt answers everybody. Now that I know how the system for fighters works, I can develop a strategy to defend against this.
While we are on this topic, what are the reaction ranges for fighters? They seem to be fairly generous. For example, I have seen instances where British strategic air is attacking a target in France, then a German fighter intercepts, and a British fighter that was parked near the British strat joins in. So to me it appears that the fighter unit, in this case, "escorted" the bombers from near London, all the way to Paris.

reaction range is same as its attack range

One further question---range is not the same as "movement" in the unit attributes, is it? I presume movement is related to re-basing ranges only. In that case, where does one easily find the range for different air units, and do those ranges increase with research?

land spotting, sea spotting, attack range could not be fitted into the unitpanel so I am afraid you have to go into purchase screen and look. Not the best solution though and we are aware.

Which doesn't give the correct value - it gives the value for a fully upgraded plane, but if the plane isn't fully upgraded there is no way to find ount which upgrade(s) it is missing.

Maybe we should change it so the movement value displayed was actually the range for air units? I can't think of many situations where it woudl be cricital to know how far the unit can move but it is often useful to know whether it can hit something or not.

That seems like a good idea---movement is intuitive anyway, because the map highlights all hexes within reach when you select the unit. Range is far more valuable information.
At the same time, would it be possible to make the range information dynamic, to reflect upgrades as they occur?
