Could someone tell me how triarii are based (figures per base) and classified and how that differs from a Greek phalanx a Macedonian phalanx and a Carthaginian phalanx? Don't have a book handy at the moment.

Triarii are classified as HF, offensive spear, so 4 per base (15x40mm in 15mm). Same as the other troop types you mentioned.

But (if you are interested in this level of detail when you say "classification", which depends on what exactly you want the information for) the Macedonian phalanx would be pike armed rather than offesnvie spear, and the triarii will likely be rated as higher quality than the others.

Thanks! That's what I thought. It sucks when the memory starts to go.

Triarii, are HF Armoured Superior offensive spearmen. 2-4 bases per battlegroup. Upgrade to Elite in superior legions, or down to Average/protected in Raw legions.
Most pikes are HF, protected, Average, pike. 8-12 bases per battlegroup. Some limted superior and more raw types. Never Armoured.
Carthage Africans start as HF, protected, average, offensive spearmen, 6-8 bases I think and can be upgraded as vets to Armoured Superior.

All HF are 4 figs to a base.

Offensive spearmen usually fight in two ranks...sometimes three to cover a base loss.
Pike go in 4's.

Somewhat strange to talk of raw Triarii!
