Imperial Rome

Hi all,

My new project is a Principate army circa 200 AD.

I've trawled the web and general consensus is either red or off white for legionary colour schemes. Before I embark on this new army I thought I'd check with those of you with a hell of a lot more knowledge than I on the subject of Legionary colours.

Am I restricted to red or white or were there instances of say green or blue etc?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

My belief is that legionaries for a considerable period both before and after that date wore red tunics, auxiliaries (which included most mounted) white. Guards/elite units of all types might have been an exception to this. Cloaks were a variety of colours.

That's how I painted mine anyway, starting almost 30 years ago...don't know if the thinking on Roman colouration has changed since then...

If you get the Osprey on Roman Military Clothing that covers the period you are after it presents a fairly comprehensive account - then make your decision.
