retreat for a gain?

anyone notice that when after suppressing units below a certain point, some enemy units by design, will retreat if you continue to hammer on them? While this seems exactly as expected, sometimes units retreat actually TOWARDS the units that attacked them, or in a direction that puts them directly in line to be fired upon by another unit? Even when such units are withing the line of sight, enemy units sometimes retreat towards units that have even yet to fire and still have APs left. Comments? Seems like no unit in real life would ever retreat towards the enemy... reminds me of football, where a team fumbles forward and makes a bad play a gain... retreating towards the enemy reveals often units that were not visible to counter fire, which then opens up follow on enemy units to attack units that it did not even know were there.. in other words, seems the AI uses a retreat function sometimes as a scouting or recon function.. comments?

the cursor is where the british infantry was.. note that it moved 1 tile towards (upwards) the direction of the german paratroopers whom just fired upon it

and here is where it is after a supposed "retreat".... btw check out the rest of my photos online at my flickr site... hope this helps show what i am saying about the AI retreating in a manner no one would in real life..
