iPad crashing frequently

Playing BA on iPad (iPad 1 I'm afraid) - and the MP game keeps crashing - usually mid way through my turn, or at the end when trying to upload to Server. Happens every 10 games or so... Is this an iPad 1 issue? Or just me?

Also - reading other threads - I see this could be interpreted as trying to gain an advantage by replaying a turn - and this is certainly not my intention.

There aren't any iPad 1 specific issues as far as we know - at least none reported. Are you tending to crash on specific maps, etc?

I would try killing off any other running apps (double tap the home button, and then you can hold and terminate the apps). See if that helps stop the crash behaviour - it could be an interaction with another app.

Cheers

Thanks Pip - trying that. Hopefully will work. I did have a few apps in the background...! Hey - any new Maps due for iPad - or is there a way to download them from the net, or is that just PC / MAC? Other than that, wonderful game - and great support. You guys are industry leaders...

If you check out the forums here, you can grab some of the newer yet not-yet-official maps by using the new LST file download button on the campaign download screen. Or, assuming you have a PC or Mac of your own, you could create your own LST files (and the packed campaign) from any user campaign.

Since you already posted this I won't start a new thread for the same problem. I play the game since March on an iPad 1 and I can confirm it crashes when you least expect it - it actually happened to me just earlier today during a deadly battle. I haven't complained about it before, as the game is great that it's worth living with it, but now that more players are joining in complex battle engagements and tournaments it could be a bit strange to have to see the game go down. Of course, this is also because the iPad 1 is, well, old. I'm glad I can play the game on it though.

Here are some crash situations:

1) while showing the turn of the adversary, so right at the beginning
2) while trying to post a message, or when trying to post a longer message at the end of the game (this used to happen a lot before the 2.0.5 update)
3) when connectivity fails, especially on Wi-Fi networks that require a password (sometimes iPads cut that connection a lot faster than expected. By the time you go to Settings, relogin your Wi-Fi, BA could crash.
4) in zoomed out battles, where I'm looking at a lot of units on the map, the games may lag and crash. For example this happens in the English landing scenarios where there a lot of English infantry troops defending and a lot of Germans coming from the beaches, or in the Custom scenarios with WW1, which are almost unplayable after a certain point, and have not tried since, so I don't know what their names are.
5) drops in single player also happen but that's not as annoying as in MP, as long as you save your progress.

There were more, but I forgot about them since it doesn't happen so often after 2.0.5, but it still does.

An other strange error I observed on the iPad just a few weeks ago in the first turns of a MP Redux game, and this is a very strange one so hold on to your seat: I saved the game to play later while it was showing me the enemy turn - I literally had to go out the door. When I load it again, guess what happens? I end up controlling the enemy's force and I get to see all the moves he makes with my force selection. Very very weird. Have not replicated it again.

Also, the O/5 troops thing that was mentioned on the forums, I observed to.

And since we're talking about it and I'm actually posting stuff here, I have to say the game errors pre 2.0.5, where you'd think you shot down units only to find them coming back alive (with yours dead on some occasions) in the following turn after you have advanced... now that was annoying. I'm glad to see them gone. The most annoying thing was to see the error, play your turn, and then try to message the opponent to let him know what went on only for the game to crash on the iPad. Argh! :D

Hmmm - thanks for the info. It was initially developed exclusively on the iPad 1, but if you are having issues then it might be that we need to be even more aggressive with the memory management. Unfortunately iOS doesn't tell us when it kills off the game due to memory - it treats it like a 'feature' that it will kill off the app you are actually using rather than apps which are sitting in the background - so whereas we would have crash listings sent to us for 'real' crashes, we have no metrics on these kinds of things.

I will see if I can replicate the issue. I would ask you to try killing off any other apps in memory before playing to let us know whether that makes the problem less prevalent.

Cheers

Killed all other apps, but still coming up against frequent crashes. It happens infrequently in single player mode, but in MP it happens far too often. For me, the majority of crashes are at the end of a turn (either mine or opponent). I have even taken to saving the game to the server once the opener move replay is shown to avoid having to review their turn more than once.

Which maps are you tending to play? I'm interested as to whether it is mainly custom maps, which might be taking more memory.
