Playing first game so apologies if this has already been addressed.
If a terrain piece has to be placed 'touching side edge - own half' does the terrain piece have to be entirely in own half, or just touching edge on own half, ie. can traverse middle of table?

All area pieces have to be placed entirely in one or other half of the table. In this case, therefore, it mst be enitirely in own half.
Of course, if the other player shifts or pivots it, it may then end up partly in both halves, or indeed entirely in the other half.

Follow-up question. Is it compulsory to place a selected terrain piece? Rules don't specify.

I assume that a terrain piece is lost if i can't be legally placed? Where is the rule stating this?

Yes. (It is implicit)

Yes. Once again, this is implicit. If you can't place it, you can't place it.
