FORMAT

Swords and Scimitars Scenario Tournament. Based on the commentary about the Franco-Muslim alliances in the Syrian States list, (Page 29, Swords and Scimitars), this is an idea that Walt and I discussed after HubCon last month, So although I did not consult with Walt on any of the final decisions, if the tournament is a flop, contact Walt. It was his original idea.

15mm armies, 1 list, 900 points (variable, see below), 6x4 table. All games will be 3.5 hours plus 2-12 minutes of random time. When time over is declared, the phase that is currently being played will be completed. Lists are due to Hilton at Hilton@admin1s.com by midnight, 1 Dec 2012.

All players will design a 900 point “Standard List” (SL) from the available armies. This list will be a standard list with order of march, etc. and may be used in 2 of the 3 games. Players will also submit a “Base Force List” (BFL) from the original 900 point SL with between 650-700 points. BG’s must be the same size, quality, armor class, etc., as from the SL i.e., if you have a BG that is classified as LH in the SL, you cannot re-classify the BG as Cavalry in the BFL, even if the point cost is the same. This BFL must meet all minimum and maximums and will have an order of march as normal. The order of march for the BFL can deviate from the SL order of march. Finally, players will develop a “Reinforcing List” (RL) from the remaining 200-250 points. Again, BG’s must be the same as the SL and there is no need for an order of march, as all BG’s will arrive together. However, the RL must include a Commander from the SL. All other Commanders will begin with the BFL.

The Referee will devise a number of unique of “Allied Force Lists” (ARL). These lists will be approximately 250 points, but could be as little as 225 and as many as 275.

Scenarios—Please note that any reference to Player 1 or Player 2 is based on initiative. This is rolled per the normal rules.

Game 1: “Meeting Engagement” Both Players 1 and 2 use their BFL. Neither player can flank march. After all deployment, but prior to starting turn 1, both players must designate a side or friendly rear edge board that the RL will arrive. Both players roll for arrival of RL as above, starting with turn 4. This arrival roll is modified by the following cumulative modifiers: +1 if the RL has a FC with it; +1 for each turn after turn 4; +1 if you designated your rear edge for arrival of the RL. Therefore, the latest turn of arrival that a RL with a FC which arrived on your friendly rear edge would be turn 8 (+1 for FC; +1 for turns 5, 6 & 7; +1 for rear edge arrival; plus a die roll of “1” would result in a 6 with arrival on the next turn)

Game 2: “Hold Until Reinforced” Player 1 uses his SL. Player 1 cannot flank march. Player 2 uses his BFL. Player 2’s RL will roll a D6 for arrival starting with turn 4. On a die roll of 6, the RL will arrive the next turn on any side table edge of Player 2’s choosing. Player 2 does not have to designate a side for the arrival of the RL until he rolls a 6. Therefore, the earliest Player 2’s RL could arrive is turn 5. This arrival roll is modified by the following: +1 if the RL has a FC with it; +1 for each turn after turn 4. These modifiers are cumulative. Therefore the latest the RL will arrive on the board is by turn 10, unless there was a FC in the RL, and it would have to arrive by turn 9. Option: Player 2 can divide his RL into two contingents, provided each has a Commander. Each contingent must be designated and given to the referee prior to the start of turn 1. Each contingent must be rolled separately. All modifiers apply. Player 2 can have one contingent appear on each side table edge, as they make their arrival roll, or he may elect to have both appear on the same side table edge.

Game 3: “Quick Attack” Player 1 will use his SL. Player 2 will use his BFL. Starting with turn 4, Player 2 will roll for arrival of the ARL, as above. Player 2 will not use his RL in this game. Player 2 does not have to designate an arrival edge for the ARL until he rolls a 6. Additionally, Player 2 will not know of the composition of the ARL until he rolls a 6. ARL arrival is modified by the following: +1 for each turn after turn 4. The ARL will never have more than a TC in command.

Only the armies listed in below are available.

All armies in Swords and Scimitars and the following individual armies:

Late Byzantine Eternal Empires
Pecheneg Decline and Fall

Please note that I purposely omitted the Catalan Company, Beja and Christian Nubian as main armies that were suggested in the Swords and Scimitars theme tournament appendex. They could appear as ALR lists.

“Allied Reinforcing Lists” (ARL) for Game 3 may be taken from any allied contingent named above. Additionally, ALR’s may come from the following lists (to represent smaller European Crusader contingents). The referee will provide these lists.

Oath of Fealty

Feudal French
Imperial German
Feudal German (incl. German City and Ecclesiastical Allies)
Communal Italian
Papal Italian
Early Medieval Frisian and other Free Cantons
Early Teutonic Knights

Eternal Empire

Early Ottoman Turks

Decline and Fall

Bedouin Dynasties
