Need a C16th army

Wanting to get a second half of the C16th army and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

European and not a complete dog are about the only criteria - oh, and not too difficult to paint as I'm not very good at that part and flag availability would help :D

Late Imperial Austrian is probably the one that stands up best overall, at least I've had my arse kicked by Alasdair's one a few times.

Huguenot can also do a good mounted based army that can be very effective at lower points.

It'd certainly meet my requirements looking at it - plus the opportunity to include some slightly daft troops :D

Perversely if I were to do a French Wars of Religion army I'd do the Catholics just because they lost and are the less effective army - perhaps the Catholic League options from the Early Imperial Spanish

Are there really no other suggestions than Late Imperial Austrian and Huguenot?

Some troops with comedy value would also help :D

What if the choice were wider than European?

Thinking I could start getting lead at Warfare ...

Others that might be worth a look:

Early Danish - Loads of Cuirassiers. Tim P is using then this weekend, he may be able to offer you some insights.
Early Imperial Spanish - Great if you fancy Early Tercios but the cavalry is not brilliant.

If you fancy something non-European:

Ottomans are always worth a go, Early or Late could both be considered in your timescale.
Mughals have similarities but with added elephants, comedy rocket launchers and suicidal bombers
Tatars have been relatively successful, mainly in earlier themes.

Spotted one that might be a bit giggle worthy - Aviz Portuguese from "Cities of Gold".

Sort of Imperial Spanish lite - could morph into the other 2 later C16th Habsburg armies as well which helps :D

I would strongly recommend playing with a Moghul army, as I do, loads of heavy artillery, warriors with arquebus and cavalry & elephants.

As a plus, most of your opponents will be greatly surprised.

I'd second the suggestions of Late Imperial Austrians or Moghul.

Early Swedes might be fun, too, as well as somewhat different.

My opinion? It has to be Scots.

Make your stock from GBGs of Armoured Spear or Pike. Overseason with Artillery, add Border Horse to delay on the flanks. Then stir in a few bunches of Highlanders to run around flashing and you'll have a seriously stupid army that fights better than it should. Also it gives you an excuse to down a wee dram o' the water of life - not that you need one 8)

If you like superior infantry take Early Imperial Spanish. If you want MORE superior infantry take Caroline Imperialist, as you don´t have to field heavy mounted if you don´t want to :)
