Question from a game the other night...
My opponents knights failed the hold test and charged a unit of naffatun, who safely made it through the elephants to their rear.
Did my opponent have to test if another elephant unit could have intercepted him, or if he rolled a 6 on the variable ended up going into the elephants?

The rule is that troops do not need to test if their move could end in contact with elephants. I've always seen this as including the situation where the elephants could intercept, so no test to not charge would be required. In V1 possibly ending in contact was taken to include any VMD, but this is changed in V2, where 9-8 is clear that VMD alterations are not included. Therefore in your second scenario, the answer is that they don't need to test in V1 but they do in V2.

I'm not sure it was as clear cut under v1 as you suggest hence the explicit clarification in V2.
