Has anybody seen a deploymen like this, there are 10 units in column!

Cheesy and incompetant. Why put your LH together in a formation where they can't turn and, if they want to do a second move, can only go straight forwards? They won't be able to wheel as a battle line, as the columns can't kink*.

* This would be my contention in a competition; as I can't see anything saying that battle lines are exempt from columns of march having to kink when wheeling. I may, of course, be talking tripe.

The intent of the restrictions on columns wheeling is really to prevent the head of a column from turning on a dime to get a flank or rear charge or similar and having the back of the column move much farther than normal as it whips around. Given that the block of columns would have to wheel on a wide front, I think it would be most reasonable to handle it as a normal wheel rather than as a one base wide column. I suspect the rules aren't clear on the issue but common sense would seem to me to argue that the block moving as a battle line shouldn't need to kink. The individual columns may still have trouble moving out of the block when it's time to spread out since the kinking rules would apply then.

Hmm. Some interesting words there. "intent". "reasonable". I'm afraid that won't wash. These battlegroupd are in column of march. There were plenty of drills and ways to keep a line of units deployed for battle together - locking shields etc. I know of no such drills for allowing columns of march to manouvre side by side.

But there is a definition of column in the rules "A battle group that is one base wide is a column of march and must be “kinked” at points where it has wheeled (e.g. to follow a road) until the whole column has passed that point." No exceptions for being in a battle line. Note "must" And any kinking would cause bases to overlap.

Why is it cheesy ? It seems rather pointless, as they will find it difficult to expand, be very vulnerable to missile fire and have exposed flanks due to the narrow frontage. I can't see why anyone would deploy like this, but I wouldn't call it cheesy.

I think that the assumption is that it must be cheesey may have something to do with the reputation of the player...

But then I might just be plain mistaken...
