Naval Attack for Ground Units

As an experiment, what does everyone think of having a Naval Attack of 1 for all Ground Units to reflect shore batteries and coastal defenses? This will make bombardment less of an option except when truly necessary. I will try it out and see what the results are if they seem to make any sense or not.

How about if the amount of coastal defences was modified by the entrenchment level... so that only static forces have this ability... say Level 4 entrenchment and above has this benefit? is there any way to add buying coastal batteries to the game? after all Germany with Rommel at the lead spent massive amounts of resources on building the Atlantic Wall..

...but I can do this without coding the game. I can just mod the unit script text file.

I agree, it is rather annoying to have 5 battleships parked outside of Cherbourg constantly hitting the Corps that is there with impunity. Just my $.02.

will the AI modify it's behavior as a result of the damage inflicted by the ground units, or just whittle away their expensive navy fighting garrison units?

I am suffering fom a Italian battleship parked off El Alamein pounding away at a infantry corps turn after turn. A small anti ship attack value for ground units might be worth trying.

As Guderian mentions - if the AI does not understand the changes - which it wouldn't without extra code then this could be a problem. It woudl work ok for human vs human play.

The other option is to say naval unit have a shock attack but do no damage to ground units. This means they disrupt them and make them easier for ground units to attack but do no real damage. This is probably a more realistic and non AI breaking solution.

I like this shock idea but would it make invasions much more difficult?

Ian, I like the shock idea very much. I think that would be a very realistic option. Having an entire Corps destroyed by naval units is a bit of a stretch.

It does not work, the ships get damaged more than the units. There are ways it could be tweaked, but it would involve changes that would escalate all over the place. Best to leave it alone, or to consider the shock only option.

In my latest game vs Vypuero where I am Allies I found it very hard to just wipe enemy units out. If the enemy is inside a City like Cherbourg they get a bonus which make them less likley to hit. Think about it. Use all your air and navy in a combined attack and you might be able to wipe out a Garrison unit with some luck, most probably you will damage it by say 7 points.

Garrison cost 20
repair 7 points cost 8

So in 2 turns you destroy 28 Production Points which is 14 PP per turn. Compare this to what you can achieve with the same units in ground battles on some front where your support can mean you kill an extra enemy Armour which is worth a whole lot than 14 PP.

A Battleship cost 80 Production Point and unless you are fighting enemy navy it is very hard to get any pay off from them so I think bombard is reasonable as is.

In fact in my latest game I found it so hard to wipe out Cherbourg and the surrounding units so I landed some hex away and slowly fought my way through the Garrisons to gain a foothold next to Cherbourg and then could with combined force take it but it was not easy. Now that I think of it, I think we saved just before that and I am just thinking out loud on the future expectations. I did not take Cherbourg yet, Vypuero did I take it? :D

nope not yet. I sent more garrisons. You pounded my motor too.

you are probably right we should not change it, because after all were we not just discussing that the axis is too strong?

Attack the ships with aircraft.

The ships will soon move off :D

Try buying aircraft and getting them to Egypt intact, not easy for the UK. there should be a TAC bomber there at start.
