Line of Sight, Cover, and Tanks

I'm fairly new to the game, so early apologies if this question is stupid.

I've been trying to figure out exactly how line of sight works when there are intervening units. Tanks in a column for example, the last tank seems to be able to shoot over multiple tanks at a target directly in front of it without decreasing probability.

This doesn't really make sense to me, especially with infantry. I tried assaulting a machine gun nest with a Sherman leading the charge and two infantry units directly behind it, assuming the Sherman would shield them. Nope...

Do intervening units have any impact on hit probability/cover, and more importantly, should they?

The thing to remember is that nothing is to scale - it's all abstracted. Each square represents 10s if not 100s of yards (the firing ranges are not linear so I don't want to get pinned down on the exact scale). But basically all the units are much more spread out than the graphics might make them appear. Units never block each other from LOS or LOF.

Fair enough. Thanks!

For those that want to use a smaller scale you can tweak the Units files ... there is a BLOCKING value that you can apply to the unit much like a building.

That only tells the game whether or not a destroyed unit blocks the tile (and has to have its wreck removed) IIRC.

Oh yes, that's right.

Can a unit be made to block a tile then by changing an existing value?

To block LOS? I don't think so. It would need some code changes to take the units into account.
