Hi. I'm a noob to tabletop war gaming. I'd like to get into ancient Roman era. I've bought the rule book and Roman army list book. I'm confused about how to start putting together model armies. I've seen metal starter sets - are there also plastic starter sets? Is there a good list of sources somewhere? Thanks.

Some manufacturers offer starter packs of metal figures specifically for FoG. And these days there are a number of brands of high quality plastic figures available. I don't havw details off hand but someone else is bound to reply to your post (if they don't I'll do some research for you).

An important consideration is the scale you wish to play: 15mm or 25/28mm?

Also, where you live in the World: some retailers/manufacturers may be easier/harder for you to access depending on whether you want to visit a physical shop or trade stand at a convention, or order off the internet.

In 15mm I think it's mostly metal (plastic seems to be the bigger figures). The good news is that lots of manufacturers do Romans so you're spoilt for choice. There are also plenty of NE USA players who post on here so they can perhaps give guidance. The US being such a large market though most manufacturers have a representative.

The options are to buy a "starter army" or just work out what figures you need and buy them.

The 'starter armies' are usually based on the starter army in the army list books (the one you see early on in each army section). This gives you a representative army of about 650 points. Two points to note: most tournament games are about 800 points (so if you want to do that you might want to buy that much to start with) and a representative army is great but isn't optimised for tournament play.

If you take the other option or working out what figures you need and buying them the obvious question is "what figures do I need?" I'd suggest look at www.madaxeman.com and look at the FOG:AM wiki section. That has the Rome book of lists. If you click on the various Roman armies it'll take you to a page for each army and at the bottom of that page there are often a bunch of lists that people have designed, plus a nbunch of links to manufacturers. For example the LLate Republican Roman area has 10 different lists.
