:!: :!: :!: :( :(

:!: represents open space, is a BG of cavalry that has contacted heavy foot :( in the flank and then stepped forward a bit to contact light foot :D frontally. :( was already engaged in melee with enemy BG  but has turned two bases to face  . The results of the melees are that :( has become fragmented. The rules say that mounted do not break off if "the enemy" is fighting in two directions. Since half or more of the enemy stands in frontal contact are steady (albiet light) foot NOT fighting in two directions, I think the cavalry  would break off.

Is that correct?

Thanks Terry G.

Hi Terry

It is if the cavalry are fighting in 2 directions that they do not break off.

It doesn't matter how many directions their opponents are fighting in.

So the LF passed their CMT to not evade?

Correct, assuming the LF passed their CMT to stand. Page 106, 3rd bullet says mounted troops break off if at least half their close combat opponents are STEADY foot. The next sentence in the rules says that you don't count bases in overlap only the ones in contact. Half the opponents are steady, so the cav breaks off.
