Greetings everyone.

My Flames of War group has decided to dabble in Napoleonics. None of us own any miniatures yet. After doing some research I I have ordered FoG-N and Triumph of Nations. We intend to test the rules out using bases with some type of label while we decide what to do about miniatures. I previously downloaded the Quick Start rules but have seen some comments that it might be better to actually play a small scenario with the full rules. So here is where I want some advice:

1. How many points would you use for a teaching scenario?

2. What Army Lists would you choose for the two sides at that point level?

3. Why would you pick those over other lists?

4. Are there any lists you would avoid and if so why?

My hope is to be able to really let FoG-N shine and therefore I am looing for the best game experience possible. I am aware of the common view that it may take a few games for the beauty of FoG-N to reallyshow through. That is why I would like a couple fo good lists/point values so that we can play them multiple times to get to the "ah ha" moments.

A very complex and yet also simple question .

In order to begin, I would say 600-800 points seems good . On a 6x4 table it leaves room for manoeuvering .

Now the question about army, what period and so on ...the answer is pretty simple : read about the period and choose THE army you like , paint it and play even if it is not a winning army . It will be the army you like .

You can either choose the revolutionary period, early empire or latter perdiod . In the early empire period most "ennemies" of France are unreformed and playing with them is perhaps a bit more difficult at first . Late period most armies are reformed and "easier" to use .

Uniforms did change, but if you all agree ( what most of us do ) is if you have painted a beautifull 1812 russian army, you can also use it in 1805, same for the french, the saxons and so on ...

The one thing you should do is in order to begin choose a common period : early or latter, TON or E&E .

Some armies do not really change : austrians are and will remain unreformed, Ottomans well are ...ottomans ...

French autumn 1813 v russian and or prussian same time frame

3. Why would you pick those over other lists?

The are the standard work horse armies. Not too weird. Reasonably matched. Variety of options. And will serve you in good stead as things grow.

4. Are there any lists you would avoid and if so why?

I would stick to main stream main theater types. Austrians add a lot of variety but may feel disadvantaged.

I don't know if we are dabbling anymore, I'd say we are hard core submerged.

Ok, since it's early days, what you want to do is get a letter off early. Something like this:

"Dear Mr von Blücher,

On Sunday, 18 June 1815 I plan on having a party. Please be there. Earlier the better. Don't turn up at 16:30... that would just be rude. Try to be there early. Bring as many friends as you can.

Signed,

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington."

This will avoid any buttock clenching moments toward the end of the day.
