Suppose a battle group in four files defending a unit of artillery three wide (which was supporting before the contact by enemy); does the side base overlap an enemy battle group which is also three wide and in edge to edge contact with the artillery bases? (the overlapping base is actually behind the artillery bases the battle group is defending and therefore it has no corner or side edge contact with the enemy battle group)

The supporting BG is treated as if level with the front of the guns. To make this clear I usually move any files not behind guns to level with the front of the guns. Whereupon it becomes clear that they can overlap.
