I am interested in FoG:N; it looks like a great game, and the period is fascinating. Which leads me to ask: how fussed does the FoG:N community get about having the "correct" figures on the table? If I were to buy a pile of, say, British figures, could I use them for any British army in the period, or would I get hissed out of the room because they aren't exactly right for 1802 / 1809 / 1815?

Exactitude is not as big a deal in FoG:AM and FoG:R, whereas the Napoleonic gaming community has a reputation for being rather more fussy about such details. And it matters to me, because I can't afford to buy lots of figures and would like to be able to play a variety of armies.

Based on what I've seen to date, this is not a big deal at all. Our group has been interested in trying a bunch of different armies for which we have no proper figures. No problem! We put what we have on the table and call it whatever is necessary. At least your Brits will always represent some flavor of Brit. That hasn't always been the case in our games.

I agree. if you use a 1811 british army, you could also use the figures for 1815 even if the uniform changed a bit (shako, helmet mostly ) or for the russians it changed also but why paint 2 different russians army, or 3 different french armies ( revolutionnary, early imperial, white uniform and latter 1812 pattern ...) pointless .

I think there is a good amount of toleration when the armies are similar.

Austrians switch from helment to shakos but still wore white. I have helmets for by 25mm and shakos for my 15mm Austrians.

I think when they aren't right at all that is the line.
I.E. I wanted Guard infantry but i don't have any in my french army but I will use these british fusiliers because they have a bearskin hat. That's a no go.

My Dog ate a prussian artillery carriage so I am using a French one for awhile is ok however.

So I think they need to stay same nation and similar type. But the uniforms can be flexible.

So no cossacks pretending to be Cuirassier.
And in your case babyshark, no byzantine lancers pretending to be russian uhlans, which I know is you secret agenda.

The Spanish had at least 4 different uniform changes (coat colour, helmet/shako/bicorne, militia/volunteers etc) in the 12 years from 1803 to 1815 yet I wheel out my my white uniformed, Bicorne wearing figures and everyone knows they are Spanish and accepts it as such, irrespective of the year.

However putting Russians on the table and playing them as French................................

I'm pretty flexible - e.g., willing to use helmeted Austrians in 1815, French line infantry with shakos in 1800, or any Spanish for any time, but somehow I just can't bring myself to use my 1806 Prussians (bicornes) for 1815.....I just can't....so I am currently building "reformed" Prussian army for 1812-1815. I guess it has something to do with the fact that the 1806 Prussians look out-of-date and that the army was so totally destroyed in that war that it feels like the "reformed" army is a different army.

I am with you on this one. I actually have it on my list as its about the only thing of unique size that I don't have. So I am eyeing the 1806 Prussians. I was thinking of L'estoq's force at Eylau for my 25mm types. But next year or year after maybe 15mm

That's what I was hoping to hear. I just spent a bunch of money on a FoG:R army, so I won't get a FoG:N set in the immediate future, but I have it to look forward to now.

So we can expect your FoG:R army finding its way into FoG:N games in the interim?

well if these are Turks....not much change in uniforms.....
