What is the best way to use Byzantine Cv that are La front rank & B rear rank?
Seems if you get close enough to shoot, you run a fair risk of one unit just charging into the enemy whilst the others manage to pass impetuous charging tests?

Erm, they're awful. The enemy just need to move to 5 MU in their turn. You don't get to shoot then as you can't risk a BG charging off by itself.
IMO the rules need changing so foot must only test not to charge enemy in 2 MU and mounted 4 MU.

You have to treat them as lancers alone. The bows are moderately useful when facing skirmishers as they allow you to respond in kind and then charge.

They are slightly more expensive lancers with the added ability to shoot if the situation allows, e.g. against skirmishers or if you can maneuver them to be able to shoot before you have to charge. Especially if they are drilled and within a command range of a general, it may well be worthwhile to take a chance that they will charge without orders if you have a good target to shoot. At least in the beta version of V2, it did look like Bw* cost would be reduced to make Lance, Bow* troops more cost effective.
